Sports scientist and Olympian Prof Greg Whyte describes the physiological challenges of jet lag, high temperature and humidity England must combat during their first match.

In this special edition of the podcast, Guardian science editor Ian Sample meets Professor Greg Whyte, a former Olympic pentathlete and fellow of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science, to discuss the environmental challenges facing England on Saturday when they play Italy in Manaus.

Greg is also an England fan, but he kept a cool head as he explained to Ian how hydration, acclimatisation and psychology will all play key roles in England’s bid for World Cup glory.
